London Marathon Turns Up the Heat with Hottest Weather On Record

London Marathon Turns Up the Heat with Hottest Weather On Record

You train for months. You plan your kit, your nutrition, your hydration plan. Then Mother Nature has other ideas and the weather turns ugly, testing all your preparation. This happened recently with the Boston Marathon. Runners bravely fought temperatures barely getting out of the 30◦’s F and heavy rain.

Conversely, the London Marathon recorded one of the hottest marathons with a predicted 24◦C (75◦ F). These sudden changes in weather can prove dangerous for the athletes, sending many to medic tents for treatment and dehydration. Having the proper gear and contingency plan is necessary to turn a possibly dangerous (and miserable) race into a success at the finish line.

One such issue that typically arises from increased heat is chafe and blisters. 2Toms® attended the London Marathon Expo and helped hundreds of runners find the best protection. SportShield® and BlisterShield® are top rated to protect skin from chafe and blisters before they start.

Sportshield is a roll-on liquid that creates a smooth, silky barrier between your skin and friction. It is waterproof, sweat proof and lasts 24 hrs! Long enough to get you through any race chafe-free.

BlisterShield is a powder formula that protects skin by preventing moisture from contacting the skin and reducing the friction that causes hot spots and blisters. It allows the skin to breathe and is comfortable for all 26.2 miles.

One runner saw the benefits of SportShield protection first hand:

Hello! I bought some of your anti chafe wipes on Saturday at the ExCel for the marathon on Sunday. I’ve always suffered horrendously with my inner thighs (I’m not ‘big’ by any means) destroying themselves and have spent a small fortune on various products claiming to work…all crap! On Sunday I ran 26.2miles without a single thought to any kind of chafing, it was incredible, absolutely incredible! Will be buying loads more in bulk for future runs now I know I can do it without the fear of destroying my thighs! So just a thank you really! Awesome awesome product! Kindest regards, Chris

2Toms will protect you during the most grueling of race conditions and help you get across the finish line chafe and blister free!

2Toms Knowledge: Learn How to Prevent Blisters, Stop Chafing & More

Athletes are generally a helpful bunch. We want to see each other succeed. Okay, maybe not always in the same race, but we do like to help each other out.

I didn’t realize that when I was a new runner. I felt I had to figure it all out on my own. I didn’t want to look like a noob, I guess. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed helping 2Toms with their Knowledge Base Web pages.

The Knowledge Base pages include useful information on a range of subjects for athletes, including advice on how to prevent foot blisters for runners or how to prevent chafing for runners. While those might sound like the same topic, they’re actually not. Both subjects come with different problems and solutions. For example, while toes can rub together—skin on skin—and cause blisters, fabric is often the culprit when it comes to chafing.

Cyclists, hikers and walkers have different questions than runners, of course. Learn about common hiking and walking injuries, or find out about gear that can help prevent chafing for athletes of those sports. You can also get information on what causes body odor and how to stop it. I know I didn’t really want to ask anyone about that.

If you have a blister, find out what kind it is and the best way to treat it. Of course, the best thing to do is to stop blisters before they start. And, since you don’t have to be a runner to get one, you can also find out how to prevent blisters for athletes of different types.

So, check it out. Click the link to head over to the 2Toms Knowledge Base. Learn something new and if you don’t see an answer to your question, leave a comment and we’ll answer it there or here on the blog!

Running Long? Make Sure You Have Good Socks and Shoes

I ran my very first half marathon in 2009: the Seattle Half Marathon. It was only my second race ever as an adult. The first 10 miles were awesome, but everything after that was painful. Not because I was sore. Not because I was out of breath. Nope. It was because of blisters.

I could feel them on the bottom of almost every toe. And I knew I had two on each big toe. They seemed to get worse with every step. Afterward, I was afraid to take my shoes off. That was before I knew how important it is to choose good socks and shoes. It was also before I knew about anti-chafing products for runners.

It’s so important to get yourself a quality pair of shoes if you plan to run long distances. However, it’s not just the brand of shoe, it’s also the fit. Long-distance runners need a little extra room in their shoes because the feet swell after so many miles. Try on new running shoes later in the day when you’re feet are at their largest. Many running shoe stores will let you “test-drive” your shoes for a certain amount of time. My store gave me 90 days, for example. Don’t be afraid to take back shoes that are not fitting properly.

When buying socks, make sure they are made with a synthetic moisture-wicking fabric that will keep your feet cool and dry for long periods of time. Click on the link to learn more about socks on 2Toms’ page on “The Best Socks to Prevent Blisters.”

On Sunday, I am running the Seattle Half Marathon again. I’m happy to say that I’m much wiser now. Or am I? On Monday, I bought a brand new pair of socks to match my outfit for the race.

Before everyone starts yelling at me in the comments, this time I have 2Toms BlisterShield to keep my toes blister-free during my half.

By the way, great news if you are in need of some anti-chafing or blister prevention products from 2Toms. They announced last week here on the blog that they will be offering FREE ground shipping on all U.S. domestic orders made through the website from Black Friday (Nov. 23) through Cyber Monday (Nov. 26). In addition, 2Toms will be donating 10 percent of profits from all online orders placed between Nov. 23 and Dec. 14, 2012, to the Bikes Belong Foundation to help improve the future of bicycling.
