In our family, my Hubby is definitely the most athletic among us. He was a member of the track team in high school and would have continued with this on into college, if not for an unfortunate knee injury. When I eventually met him, one year out of college, he was still quite interested in trying to run again, but year after year of our relationship, he has just not been able to keep it up. He’d start out strong and committed, alright. But after 2 weeks – maybe a month tops – his knee was yelling at him again and his interest just plummeted.

Until… about a year and a half ago. When a friend of ours – a friend who had made an inspiring and impressive physical change for the better in his own appearance and health – introduced Hubby to the Couch to 5K Program.

I gotta say, even as an outsider watching Hubby try and then slip at his attempts to get back into running for the last 10+ years, this easy-does-it progression into full-out running did seem like it may be just the thing he needed to get back on track (ha!).

So what is it, you ask? The Couch to 5k Program (C25K) “is a fantastic program that’s been designed to get just about anyone from the couch to running 5 kilometers or 30 minutes in just 9 weeks.” (http://www.c25k.com)

“Its secret is that it’s a gentle introduction to getting the body moving, starting off alternating between walking and running small distances, and slowly building up until after 8 weeks, you’re ready to run 5 kilometers or 30 minutes non stop.” (http://www.c25k.com)

It’s that slow but steady back and forth between running and walking that really helped condition Hubby’s knees (not to mention body and mind) into not only “behaving” during his increasingly longer runs, but actually feeling great from the experience!

And now, Hubby is well past completing the program and I’m proud to say he’s kept up the running – now able to run almost 7 miles in an hour – and his body is in better condition than it was when we got married. He is healthy and happy to be able to get back to an exercise program he really enjoys.

We also have several other friends who are either currently working towards or have already completed this awesome program – friends who have run before and those who truly would consider themselves couch potatoes – all with similar results to Hubby’s and all committed to this new, healthy routine in their lives.
